Mysore is a city in Southern India where Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga has been taught to tens of thousands of students from all over the world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since the 1930's. "Mysore Style" classes refer to his method of teaching which is a self-practice format. In a Mysore Style class, the student works through the challenging asanas from the Ashtanga sequence at his or her own pace while the teacher is able to work with each student on an individual basis, providing subtle adjustments, motivation, and advice. With persistence and consistency, the practice has the possibility of transforming into a moving meditation. Because the student dictates his or her own practice, it is ideal for beginning students developing the more basic asanas from the sequence thus requiring a shorter practice, and more advanced practicioners who already have a developed practice and would like to take it to a deeper level. Mysore classes are also ideal for people dealing with injuries that may only worsen by attending led classes. It is important to come to class with a sense of respect for those around you and an openness to something new. Please make sure to speak with the teacher before you begin your practice to let him know your familiarity with the sequence, anything unique that you might be dealing with i.e. injuries, pregnancy, and specific things you would like to work on.
